Promoting Transparency and Accountability

HUD OIG Responsive Website Development
Fully Responsive Website

With a mission to advance integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness in its programs and operations, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General (HUD OIG) made it a priority to redesign its website to improve engagement with stakeholders; develop a more modern, aesthetically pleasing, and consistent design; and create a more usable site—one that would be organized and intuitive for visitors. HUD OIG turned to Bixal to lead the redesign of its public website.

Client:

Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Project:

Website, Branding & Graphic Design

Duration:

9 Months

Key Technologies:

Drupal, Acquia Integration

Streamlined Development Process
During the initial discovery phase, Bixal validated the project goals and objectives with the HUD OIG leadership and staff, identified key audiences, and gathered and documented requirements for the site and each of the new site sections. We then developed a new information architecture and detailed technical requirements. We built out the site using Drupal 7, an open source content management system (CMS) that continues to allow the HUD OIG team to add, modify, and delete content easily.

What the new site offers is highly intuitive and provides users advanced filtering functionality to easily locate reports and publications, integration with social media, and RSS feeds. Fully responsive, it allows users to access the site on a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Through the entire project, Bixal took steps to ensure that the HUD OIG site was compliant with Section 508 and other federal website requirements. We also supported the deployment of the site to Acquia’s Cloud, FISMA moderate security compliance.

Branding and Graphic Design
As a result of the website project’s success, HUD OIG asked Bixal to support important organizational branding and design initiatives. Bixal developed a comprehensive branding package, completed the design of various semi-annual reports, which are presented to Congress, and is currently working on a series of videos for public-facing and internal communications efforts.
